Lionel Messi, the legendary footballer set to embark on his new chapter with Inter Miami, attributes his enduring success in the sport to his relentless pursuit of self-improvement.
Having graced the professional stage for nearly two decades and amassing an enviable collection of team and individual accolades with Barcelona and Argentina, Messi shared his insights during an interview conducted during Argentina’s tour of Asia, recently released to the public.
“For me, it has been the driving force behind everything I have achieved, both collectively and individually,” Messi expressed when reflecting on his illustrious career. “It’s about mentality, resilience, sacrifice, and an insatiable hunger for more. I’ve possessed this drive from a young age. I assumed responsibility and had a clear vision of what I wanted.”
Determined to exceed his own expectations, Messi consistently poured his heart and soul into his endeavors. He elaborated, “I always gave my utmost to achieve the maximum. Although success wasn’t guaranteed, I remained committed to that mindset, always striving to outperform myself. I consider myself fortunate to have been relatively spared from injuries.”
Among Messi’s most coveted triumphs was captaining Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar, marking his fifth participation in the prestigious tournament. Reflecting on the experience, the 36-year-old shared, “I truly cherished this recent World Cup because I knew it could be my last. To be honest, had we not emerged as champions, I doubt I would have continued playing for the national team. That much I can say for certain.”
Messi expressed his enjoyment and confidence in the team during the tournament, acknowledging the weight of expectations and potential criticism in the absence of victory. “While perhaps not as intense as in the past, I don’t believe I would have possessed the strength to persevere. It would have been the end.”
Looking ahead, Argentina’s next major challenge lies in the 2024 Copa America, which Messi triumphantly won for the first time in 2021. The tournament, hosted in the United States, will coincide with the midpoint of the 2024 MLS season, signifying Messi’s inaugural full campaign with Inter Miami.
Approaching the age of 37 when the Copa America commences, Messi was asked about the duration of his national team career. In response, the forward admitted, “Honestly, I cannot say. It will happen when it’s meant to happen. After recent successes, what remains is to savor the moment. Time will determine when that chapter concludes. Naturally, considering my age, that moment will approach sooner rather than later, but I embrace each day, relishing everything we are currently experiencing.”
Having been blessed with the honor of becoming both South American and world champions, Messi’s focus now lies in embracing the joy derived from these accomplishments and the journey that lies ahead.
